Unit Outline:

In Year 10, Students will undertake a number of small practical projects in order to cover the theory and practices. In Year 11 students undertake a larger project, designing and making a quality item.

Assessment:

Design and Make project (non-examined assessment) worth 50% of your final mark.

A final exam, testing knowledge and design skills which is worth 50% of the GCSE.

Single tier of entry covering Grades 9-1

Further Information:

  • Graphic art and modelling in card, foam board, MDF, acrylic, and Styrofoam.
  • Pictorial drawing, exploded views, orthographic and perspective drawing
  • Computer-generated modelling using CAD/CAM.
  • IT programs such as CorelDraw 12, Pro Desktop, and 2D Design
  • Cartoon drawing, booklet design, business card design.
  • Workshop skills.

Trips:

There are many opportunities to get involved with competitions both in and out school. Some students take advantage of applying for an Arkwright Scholarship to help their career.

Possible Career Destinations:

It is useful preparation for work in product design, Secondary Teaching, car Design, Graphic Design, Landscape Architecture, Civil Engineering, Furniture Design, Fashion Designer, Primary Teacher, Chemical Engineering, IT Game Designer, IT Engineering, Advertising, Packaging, Film Set Design, Animation, Architecture and engineering. The GCSE is very good preparation for A Levels, College and for work at the age of 16.
